Live Jermain Ortiz will be looking to get revenge and a title shot against Cristian Ruben Mino
>
Junior welterweight Jermaine Ortiz is determined to make fans forget his
February bout with Teofilo Lopez. Despite the fight dividing opinions, many
were indifferent towards him.
"I'm going to forget my last performance, I'll say that," Ortiz told
Boxing Scene on Friday ahead of his bout against Cristian Ruben Mino
at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, on a Box Lab Promotions card
broadcast on DAZN.
At the weigh-in, Ortiz, 17-2 (8 KOs), weighed in at a whopping 140
pounds, while Mino, 24-10-2 (17 KOs), was just under the junior
welterweight limit of 139.8 pounds. Ortiz, a native of Worcester,
Massachusetts, has made significant changes to his training since becoming
his new head coach.
"I started training full-time with (Cuban coach) Lester Diaz
in April," Ortiz said. "We worked together for a while before. I met him
when I was living in Dubai temporarily and we built a good
relationship there. We worked hard and got back together in the United
States.
" Ortiz has been out of action since February after a close loss to
Lopez, with the Boxer fan ratings of 179 fans who rated the bout narrowly
favoring Lopez 113.77 to 113.46. While some felt he deserved the unanimous
points loss, Ortiz said: "My motivation is to become a world champion.
That's what I'm working for and that's what I'm going to do until I'm
champion.
" Ortiz's next opponent, 27-year-old Mino from Buenos Aires, Argentina,
offers Ortiz an opportunity to move up the WBA rankings. "Hopefully
this fight will get me back into title contention," Ortiz said. "I'm
fighting for the WBA Continental title and right now the champion in that
division is 'Rayo' (Jose Valenzuela), so that's my goal.
Ortiz is co-promoted by Box lab Promotions with CES
Boxing.
